Why Do Christians Struggle With Sin?

                                              by Byron Register

Why do so many Christians struggle with sin? Can we ever come to the place in life where we are not being defeated by sin? We will never reach sinless perfection but we can and must reign over sin. We must understand that Adam is the reason we are all born a sinner.

(Romans 5:12 KJV) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Sin entered into the world by one man, Adam. The word sin here is the Greek word hamartia meaning to miss the mark, to wander away from the law of God, violate God's law in thought or act. So when this sin entered into the world so did death by sin, death is a separation from God. Through Adam this death by sin was passed to all men, or humankind, "for that all have sinned:" The second word 'sinned' is a different Greek word, hamartano meaning to err in action, in respect to a prescribed law, which was the law given to Adam in the Garden of Eden. So by the hamartia coming into the world, by one man, and by metonymy the word means here in this Scripture the practice of sinning or the habit of sin. So we all have been born with this sinful nature so we all have the desire to practice sin, it's in our old nature.

So we as Christians have a sinful nature, so what do we do with it? We can't do anything but Christ could and did.

(Romans 6:6 KJV) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Knowing this, knowing what? One that we have been justified by faith [Rom 5:1], we have access by faith into this grace [5:2], we were justified by His blood [5:9], we are dead to sin [6:2], we were baptized into Jesus [6:3], we were baptized into His death [6:3], we were buried with Him [6:4], and we should walk in newness of life [6:4]. Knowing this, that our old man, our sinful nature was crucified with Jesus in order that the body of sin might be destroyed so we should not serve sin, hamartia. We must reckon ourselves dead to sin [6:11].

(Romans 6:12 KJV) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

We should not let sin reign in our bodies and we should not obey sin or it sinful desires. Christ has done the work of crucifying our sinful nature but we must by faith reckon our selves to be dead to sin and not let sin reign in our bodies, we can always live our life as Paul did.

(Galatians 2:20 KJV) I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
